' The Science of Bliss ' - an ecstatic approach

Monday, October 26, 2009

P.Natarajan.

What is Bliss ? The dictionary gives two meanings (i)' the highest happiness and (ii) ' the special happiness of heaven'. Shall we find some apt explanation to the question what it means to say as 'The Science of Bliss'!

Bliss can be compared scientifically to the emanating and unhindered rays of the Sun-Light. Bliss can be a state of profound spiritual satisfaction, happiness or joy. There is one more angle how the state of bliss is viewed in Hindu philosophy. Bliss is often associated with religious ideas after life.

When the sun shines onto the droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere, the phenomenon causing a spectrum of light most well known as the ' Rainbow ' appears. It is also referred in mythology as "Indradhanush "- the bow of 'Devendra'. In the Physics lab, the students learn how the spectrometer is used to split the incident light into its constituent seven colours as a pattern of 'VIBGYOR'.

But to our naked eyes , we don't see the VIBGYOR, but only the predominant 'White' colour.
Likewise, the state of bliss contains different colours which include states of happiness, sorrow, gloom, anger or rage, bravery, zeal, lust, love, and so on. Like a spectrometer splits the incident beam of light, it is the 'circumstances' that make or mar the behaviour of a man. When a person does not get the required information, he gets angry. He is too pleased when someone praises him. He braves the weather to attend to important business. He is overjoyed when his little child is full of smiles. He loves his family. He fights tooth and nail to get himself free from the clutches of a disastrous situation. In short he is simply a bundle of emotions and gets easily affected by the happenings of everyday.

When the sun beam passes through the branches of a tree, it gets refracted. Under a thick green wood tree, no light gets through, shadow only remains. Under the influence of wind, the leaves of the tree move when more and more or less and less light passes through. The changing pattern of sun light under such influence of weather conditions can be compared to the circumstances leading to a change in the emotion or behaviour of a person.

Sunlight has no colours as discussed above. It is predominantly White. The state of bliss or 'Aananda ' has no colours. It is simply a state of peacefulness or can be aptly described as ' Shanti'. There is no scope for any emotion in 'Shanthi'

There are many elements and chemicals present in the sun light. When each element gets burnt,it emits a specific colour. For example, if you strike a match stick, it burns yellow. The green or red sparkler, which is nothing but a chemical element, emits corresponding green or red light only. The LPG or cooking gas burns blue. Copper Sulphate gives out a green colour. Magnesium sparkles in bluish white shade. It is a universal phenomenon that when all elements present in sun light get burnt together, we see only ' White Colour '.

Besides the other elements, it has been discovered that 'Helium' is the second most abundant element in the observable Universe. Helium due to its lightness evaporates from the gas and dust cloud and thus is relatively rare on Earth. Helium is in abundance in the Sun which is described as 'Helius' in Latin. In Astronomy the Sun is considered as heliocentric - that is the Sun is at the centre of the Universe which is opposite to 'Geocentric' of Earth. As a matter of fact, the word helium gets its birth from Sanskrit. "Heli" in Sanskrit means "SUN".

'The Science of Bliss' gets a sharp focus in understanding when we analyze the property of Helium, present in the Sun. All other elements in the Sunlight get burnt but Helium remains as it is as it is an inflammable gas. It does not undergo any change. Besides it is also a very light element. It has no weight. It is also termed as a ' Noble Gas ' . We can readily compare the state of 'BLISS' to that of 'Helium' in a similar way. Bliss has no emotions, no colors. Bliss is odorless, tasteless and non-toxic. Bliss means everlasting peace. It is considered as the 'noblest state', every human aspires for. A person feels very light in body and mind when he is peaceful. He is not agitated nor inflamed.

Traces of light pass through the branches of the tree. Likewise, traces of bliss get reflected by way of some emotions like happiness or anger or any one of the forms of 'nava-rasa'. This happens as and when a person is disturbed emotionally due to some happenings either concerning him or in the general environment. It results in losing his peace of mind. They can be called the reflections of the soul or the self.

The bright white colour of sun light symbolically represents the state of absolute peace or simply the bliss.

Doctors advise us to be careful with our diet in order to be in a state of peacefulness. The general argument that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach does not hold water, when it comes to dieting. Similarly the expression 'hair of the logic' can not be applied when you become careful with your diet. The hair of the logic describes that some people think that the best way to overcome a hangover is to have another drink. This remedy is based on the principle 'likes are cured by the likes' : in other words the cause of the problem is likely to be the cure.In the olden days, people believed that if you were bitten by a mad dog, the best antidote is to place the hair of the dog on the wound.!

Doctors advise 'NO' to salt in food to control the blood pressure. Sastras call it as ' ALAVANAM '. Lavanam means salt and alavanam means 'no salt theory'. One's passion, rage and anger will come under control and a person can look for an equilibrium position when he follows 'alavanam' in his diet . It is one of the methods adopted to reduce the weight and feel light in body and mind. In this condition, we can even forget the presence of the body as we go deep in meditation leading to a ' blissful state '.
